All her life, my mother made wonderful knitted clothes for her 4 daughters. Last year, I and my 3 sisters decided that it is our turn to make something for her. So we started a Grandmother’s Flower Garden Quilt.
My sisters are not quilters but all of them were happy to learn how to sew hexy flowers. And they LOVE it!
17 months later, here is our finished project. It measures about 65”x75”.
The measure of the time we spent working on this quilt – Alex – my little nephew. From 8 months old…
to 2 years and 2 months…
Most of the time, each of us stitched hexagons alone. A few times we managed to gather 2 or 3 and one time, I think, we gathered all 4! A feast! We would have loved to freeze the time!
At these meetings, my mother always baked something good for us.
My hubby always provided for us the music we wanted to listen to.
Happy memories that we all treasure!
I am happy that I added this traditional project to my quilting experience – I learned many things, one of them – the patience!
I am sure my mother will not keep this quilt only for her. We will borrow it from her. When we were little girls, we shared the same clothes many times, now we will share this quilt. I am sure each one of us will say “I want to be the last one to have it!”, so there will be no fight!
One of the questions my mother always asks me is: “who could ever pay you for all the work you put in your quilts?” For this particular quilt, I think the answer is clear! But usually I don’t bother with the answer, it’s simple: you can’t make something beautiful without hard work.
I don’t know if we will ever find time to sew again such a project. But this winter me and my sister Nina will work on the cube quilt.
I hope to take a picture with this quilt and we all soon! And I will tell you what they think about the quilting. None of them saw the quilting yet.

I was enjoying all the pictures and commentary about this quilt as I have a king size one that I've worked on, on and off for over four years now. I am at the hand quilting stage and it is very slow going. I am ashamed to admit I have gone for months without sewing a stitch on it! Perhaps I will be inspired to get going on it again because of your photos and story!
THEN I was blown away when you said it was your birthday today!!! It is MINE too! I am 58 today. 😀 Happy Birthday to you Geta! Thanks for all you do to inspire me as a fellow quilter. 🙂

Kris P says
Your quilt is the the most stunning GFG I've ever seen. Your quilting really adds to it.
Thank you for showing the photo where you are trimming it after quilting. I am working on an EPP 60 degree diamond star quilt, and have been wondering about how to 'finish' it. How to create an edge. Up until now, I haven't found any information on this. It appears that you simply laid the top over the batting, quilted, then trimmed.
Thank you for sharing your talents. You are truly inspiring.

That quilting is really special. Thanks for showing it. I’m tryng to finish one that was started in the l930’s and was handed down, I’ve been asked to finish it. Probably won’t ever tackle another Grandmother’s garden unless it is ready to quilt. This one needs a few blocks added. Pieces were with it.
