Do you know what fabric is this?
It’s a laser cut faux leather, a very fine and stretch material, used in the garment industry.
I knew that it’s not strong enough for using in bags, but I thought that it’s lovely to see the cut away motifs highlighted by the bright color of the fabric used underneath, so I bought it.
Three years later, I thought it’s time to make a pouch or two!
So here are my new pouches (made with my new pattern).
For sewing faux leather I successfully use the walking foot, but this fabric is fine and stretches a lot, I made a few creases while stitching the 2 seams required by this pattern -stitching done on the right side of the fabric (if you have the pattern, you know what I mean!).
Fortunately, the next step of the pattern hides the small imperfections, so that I ended up with almost “perfect” pouches.
I wanted to show you that it’s OK if your stitching is not perfect. So I made other two pouches (the same thin and difficult material, only without the cut away motifs); as you can see, the stitching is not perfect, but on the other pouches, it was worse, much worse.
The pattern is really great for “difficult” fabrics!
If you are not happy with the way your machine sews faux leather, here are a few tips:
– use the walking foot
– use Jeans needles
– use good thread
– lengthen the stitch
And use an easy pattern, like this pouch pattern.
Happy sewing,
Geta
