All the week I sewed bags (large bags, small bags, I am sick of bags!) and today at 8 PM I thought it is the best time to wash our hexy sphere quilt.
I put it in the washing machine, filled the machine with water and after a little soaking, I added some detergent – the same detergent I use for my colored clothes, only half quantity.
I washed the quilt at a gentle cycle then I used the spin cycle (600 rotations/min ) to remove the water. It removed almost all the water- 400 rotations/min it would have been better.
In the middle of the rinse cycle the machine suddenly stopped. Really- it is not the best idea to wash your most valuable quilt at 9 PM. I was terrified thinking how I will remove the wet quilt from the washing machine and which of my neighbors to ask to “borrow” their washing machine – at 9 PM!
Fortunately, the machine was kind to me and started again after I applied the “Windows” method (you know, the one we apply to our computers): turn it off, turn it on!
I pulled it from the washing machine with no mercy – fortunately, it is very densely quilted!
I laid it on the floor, flattened it for a few minutes until it was smooth; now it is hanging on a rod to dry.
I am still worried. Will the circle be perfect ? Perfect, perfect – probably NOT! I made some measurements and it seams OK. I hope minor differences will not be noticeable at 80”.
Will it lay perfectly flat ? I hope so, if not, I have to wash it again!

Glad it came out okay. I do not use detergent on my quilts ever. But I do put them in the dryer until almost dry. This is a very special quilt.

Starch and press and I am sure it will lay flat and look great, because it looks great wet now.

Hello Geta. Your quilt is just beautiful.
How funny – when I first saw your blog, it only said you were from Romania. I was in Brasov for a week in october last year and would have liked to meet you. I was hand sewing a small grandmothers flower garden (running stitched, not epp) at the time.
