This will be the background of our group quilt. Usually the background of my quilts is made out of just one fabric so this is something new for me – a scrappy background.
My engineering mind is not accustomed with scrappy things but I really like this one.
In the picture below there are 1200 1 1/4” hexagons and 10 yards of fabric. For cutting I used this technique – it is really fast. I cut through 12 layers of fabric at once (with a 45mm rotary cutter and a new blade).

This is the waste – 1 1/2” edge triangles.
I did my homework and now each of us has something to sew!
Could you believe that there are 1100 hexagons in this pretty stack ? It was fun to cut them (I saved $50, how could not it be fun ?), but I would not recommend to cut more than 600-700 in a day! I cut through 5 sheets of paper at once (tutorial here).

All those neutrals look wonderful! I'll bet you will come up with something delightful with the triangles too. I know it would be super tempting for me!

I don't think my wrists could take that much cutting. Too bad you don't have one of those Acu-Quilt cutters to speed the cutting!
Scrappy backgrounds are the best. You'll see that it will add so much depth to your finished quilt. Happy stitching!
