How to quilt letters

If someone doesn’t know what is quilting, I think this picture is pretty explanatory, don’t you think?

I adore the raw edge applique technique, because you can create a beautiful quilt top in just a few hours.

I did this straight quilting on the letters and I really like it. If you use a thick or fluffy batting, this quilting makes the letters pop.

Many times we keep the quilting within the applique piece; for these letters, I found it is better to extend a little the quilting past the top and bottom edges of the letters; I start and stop the quilting lines on the background, just near the edges (see the green lines below).

Stopping the quilting lines near the edge, inside the piece (at the red line in the photo below), would fray the fabric unnecessarily (since I used glue to keep the letters in place, fusible web reduces fraying, too).

Because I used a thread in the color of the background, the quilting on the background is almost invisible and anyway, when I quilted the background, I tried to hide it (incorporating it into the pebbles).
