Do you remember the puff quilt I made recently?
I was so excited about it and I wanted to make one for me and my husband. A queen size!
I found a way to make it lightweight, without batting and backing, I chose the fabric and the pattern but then I abandoned the idea. For now…
Because I washed that little quilt(?) (52″ square) and it hardly fitted in the washing machine. Definitely, I will not be able to wash a 80″ monster in my machine.
I think my only option would be to make it in two (or even three) parts and join them with buttons.
Do you have another idea? I saw many people make large puff quilts but I can’t imagine how they can be washed.
Phew, maybe my washing machine is too small! But I can’t change this!

Alot of people go to the laundry mat and use those huge machines.
Cute quilt!

Greta, I have a huge quilt that can't fit in my machine, either. I have washed it at the laundromat in a giant commercial machine, but also have washed it in the bathtub – did a little grape-smashing dance on it for a while with some Woolite in the water, then again a couple of times with clean water to rinse. Worked great! You need to let it drain in the tub for a long time so that it's not too heavy to lift out of the tub (don't want to rip stitches!). Then I laid it outside on a blanket for a while to get dry enough to hang for the rest of the drying process (again, didn't want the weight to pop any stitches). Voila! A clean huge quilt. 😀

Yeah! I do remember the puff quilt and I enjoyed watching the instructions on how to make it. You made it look so easy. I really enjoy this quilt. Happy you're making this one for your and DH.

Beautiful quilt ! I agree with the previous commenters, using a public launderette will solve the problem. I have done so a few times, especially for frayed-edge quilts. This way the quilts get a throrough wash and all the lint coming off the frayed edge collect in someone else's machine and not mine 🙂

I made a queen size puff in the double Irish chain design years ago as a wedding gift for one of my sisters. It was HEAVY and hard to manage. But very cozy! I don't know how she washed it, probably in the huge machines at the laundromat. My husband loved it so much, he didn't want me to give it away, so I promised him I would make us one someday. That was when I only had about a quarter of the quilt done. Once it was finished, I knew I'd never make another!

If you don't want to wash it in a commercial maybe you could get long zippers and attach the sections with the zippers. I think that would work better than buttons….maybe!

I vote for going to the commercial laundromats. I do that with whatever I have that is really big or might leave a huge mess in my own washer.

I've used the laundromat for the HUGE comforter on my bed, but it is really still too big for those machines….mmmh? I like the bathtub version.

LOL, I posted a baby puff this morning on quilting board and said the same thing about buttons! I think I will make one that way, mine was 36" square, if I do 4 of those I can wash them one at a time, maybe 2, we have a pretty big washer. I also found that not all polyfil is the same, I got some really silky stuff recently that was lighter & fluffier than the old scratchy kind.

Eu cred asa:
Immmm? Ce nopti romantice, pe urma!….

If you made smaller puffs, they would also get lower in size and the finished quilt would be thinner.
But I would go for washing in the bathtub – commercial laundromats are not common in Sweden.

it seems zippers are the best. but you need to test is first.
by the way, on the last mail over puft quilt you said that you will promise a solution for boarders…i cant find it. would you be kind to inform more about it.
i love your blog!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Those puff quilts look like so much fun to make!
maybe washing the quilt has to be done in sections then hung out on a line to dry?
