If you want to sew a useful gift for someone, a reusable shopping bag is one of the best options. I have made a few for my family members, as Christmas gifts, and they are used all the time.
Take this opportunity and go green, use fewer plastic bags!
These are not large grocery bags, I designed a pattern that uses 2 half-yards of fabric or 4 fat quarters – there is an option for whatever you have in your stash!
The bags measure 13″x16.5″ (without handles) and can be carried in the purse.
I used nice quilt cotton fabrics,
and the best thing: they are reversible, what you see below is the same bag!
For one bag you need:
– one half yard of fabric for the outer bag
– one half yard for the lining.
NOTE: You could use four fat quarters as well (and they can be all different).
This is a quick and easy project. I made six bags in just a few hours. I am glad I found another way to show off the beautiful fabrics from my stash!

Thanks for this great tutorial and pattern….. only just yesterday I was looking in the pattern books at my local fabric store — for this very bag!! I think they will make lovely gifts plus of course we all must try to cut down the number of plastic bags we use – I think it's much nicer to have our own stash of re-usable bags on hand.

I love this pattern and can’t wait to try it. Have you ever try to do one with a type of nylon or something similar for the lining? So it would prevent stains and would be easy to wipe clean?
