Working with bulky seam allowances is not fun, especially if your sewing machine does not handle such things well!
But there is a trick that reduces bulk considerably!
Here is this trick, explained in the sewing of the corner of a bag.
You must turn the seam allowances in different directions, nesting the seams. But this is not enough to make sewing easier if your layers are thick.
So here is what you have to do:
Trim the top seam allowance of the side seam as shown, to about 1/8”.
Turn the piece over to the other side. Trim the top seam allowance of the bottom seam to about 1/8”.
Now, bring the edges of the corner together, and turn the seam allowances in different directions, ensuring that the intact seam allowances cover the trimmed seam allowances.
This will result in a corner that looks like this. This method makes sewing easier compared to keeping all seam allowances intact.
After sewing, trim the seam allowances to 1/8”.
Here are some of my bags made with this trick.
Pattern for these bags here.
I hope you will try this trick!
Happy sewing!
