We love batting, right?! Even if it is that hidden layer in the middle of the quilt. It is as important as fabric! And in some situations, it becomes even more important than usual. I am thinking about the trapunto and shadow trapunto techniques. You probably already know: trapunto is just a design enhanced with an additional layer of batting that gives it a pronounced “stuffed” … [Read more...]
Free quilt design
I made this design for my newsletter subscribers; you could make it as applique or with English paper piecing or just quilt it. I have a thing for free motion quilting with straight lines, so here is what I did. At first I was tempted to make a larger design and use thread in many colors... but then I thought to experiment with only two colors. This is Aurifil 28wt thread and … [Read more...]
My secret for EASY free motion quilting
The thing that helps me most in my free motion quilting journey is this: I don't quilt with both hands on top of the quilt sandwich. I tried it in my first days of quilting and I hated it. I wanted to free motion quilt and I wanted to make it easy and fun so I tried something else. I just put my right hand under the quilt. I fold the quilt near the area I am quilting. I put the right … [Read more...]

How to quilt feathers on hexagons
Hello friends? Do you like to quilt feathers? Have you tried it yet? I ADORE it and my favorite shape to quilt on is the hexagon. AURIFIL 28wt - my new LOVE! I have a big wholecloth quilt quilted with Aurifil 12wt thread (very thick thread!!), a few quilts quilted with 40-50 wt thread (the regular weight for quilting), this time I used Aurifil 28wt - not too thin, not too thick. I think this … [Read more...]

Quilting with THICK thread- 12wt
Hello friends! Do you have thick thread in your box? How thick? We quilt usually with 40wt or 50 wt. Sometimes we need thinner thread, and other times, when we want to really show off the quilting, then we need a thicker thread. 28wt (30wt) thread works nicely, but 12wt is really a different story! You have to stitch with all these threads to see the benefits of each one. These days I … [Read more...]
Creating texture on polka dot fabric
I am sewing a few mini bags and I have to quilt on polka dot fabrics. On a few pieces I quilted stippling, then I wanted something different and I thought to join the dots on the fabric with stitching (I remember I did this as a child, with a pencil on paper, having fun creating different drawings). So here is a fun stitching, created without effort! Great free motion quilting … [Read more...]
Continuing the free motion quilting fun
Do you recall my current free motion quilting project? Lots and lots of pretty designs to sew! Here is Part 1, then Part 2. Part 3 is for the 8-petal designs- see below. So easy, so fun! Twisted! On most designs I quilted stippling, on this one I did something different; if the background is heavily quilted, the quilting will enhance the center stitching. Twisted … [Read more...]
New wholecloth quilt pattern-sneak peek
Here is a sneak peek at my new wholecloth quilt pattern. These days I am experimenting with different designs, batting layers, thread + fabric combinations. It's hard to stop! See for yourself why! Stitching these repetitive designs creates a rhythm that invites you to stitch more and more - it's a kind of addiction! That's why I couldn't stop (designing and sewing) at … [Read more...]
