One of these days started great! I spent a few hours strip-piecing faux leather.
I needed a 70-square piece. Final size of the squares – 1″.
It was so enjoyable. You couldn’t believe how easy it is to achieve accuracy with this material. It sticks to itself so well, making matching seams so easy.
The topstitching is not for decoration but for keeping the seam allowances open.
I don’t have a special foot for this material, but I do use the walking foot (that is integrated on my Pfaff machine) and I help a little the fabric to move under the needle. It works pretty well. Who knows when I will find the time to buy a proper foot? I still stitch zippers without a zipper foot!
So I wanted to make a bag with 3D pockets! These days I remembered my first school bag – wow, it was almost 40 years ago! It was a bag with 2 big outside pockets.
Big seam allowances, 2 layers of faux leather, lining- everything was too heavy for the body of the bag.
The second pocket was a better choice, it was easier to attach it to the bag.
In the end, a bad idea- with this material, pattern and the way I attached the pocket. I am afraid that with use, the pocket will rip the fabric underneath.
I know, there is a question: why I tried this, for the first time, with this material? I forgot- that’s me!
Now to save what could be saved!
Hope you have better days,
Geta

I think your bag turned out very nice. Perhaps fusing some heavy stabilizer to the inside of the bag around the stitching lines for the bottom of the pockets would secure it enough to keep them from ripping in the future. Then you could make a liner if you have not already to hide the structure of the bag. I would also think if only small items are stored in the outside pockets you shouldn't have much trouble with ripping. I really like the checked design of the pocket! Great work 🙂

Love how the pockets turned out ~ as long as you don't put anything heavy in them shouldn't they be okay?

I love your 1" square design! What about adding a button/loop or magnet…something to keep the pocket from pulling away? It's so frustrating to have to think of ripping a perfectly good bag. :/

I agree it looks good. I wonder if you put a piece of woven fabric as lining for the pocket and behind the side of the bag where it will be attached before stitching it if it would make the stitched on pocket stronger.
