Hello and Happy New Year! Are you ready for a new sewing adventure? I know I am anxious! And as always, 24 hours in a day seems not enough for all the things I want to do. But I am determined to be more organized and achieve my goals in less time than usual.
First working day and one lesson learned! Actually, I learned it (the hard way) a few months ago, but today I had the confirmation.
Here is a new quilt with an old design.
The difference between the two quilts?
To the left – wholecloth quilt To the right – raw edge applique quilt |
Last year I played with some of my designs and I printed a few on fabric, at Spoonflower. This “cheater cloth” is great for practicing free motion quilting.
And it looks more inviting than a piece of muslin, right?
So, I quilted the printed fabric. Then I did what I always do when a quilt is finished: I washed it. I knew that this fabric needs special care: a phosphate free detergent. I did not read the label on my detergent and of course, it wasn’t phosphate free. And the fabric faded a lot. More than the commercial quilting fabric.
In spite of this, the quilt still looks beautiful. And it was a pleasure to quilt this wholecloth.
And because I ADORE the idea of printing what I want on fabric (next time I will print something like this), I bought a proper detergent and hand washed a piece I printed last year. No difference between the washed piece (to the right in the picture below) and original piece!
I will show you tomorrow what else I printed.

Lovely Geta – the fading does not detract at all.

And the 10 million dollar question is … are you going to make that spoonflower wholecloth ball with the squares available for purchase?
geta@romanianquiltstudio.com says
Yes, this year I will make some of the designs available, I still have to decide if I will sell only the designs or the fabric already printed.
